Jerry
It is my understanding that Windows Tablet Edition does not support
serial ports, and that therefore the Toughbooks that come with Tablet
Edition have no serial port installed!
I have a number of CF18 Toughbooks running XP Pro (with a serial port!)
and am delighted with them. They are very good for field use and have
run all my Acoustics applications (including data collection and review
with Rio Grande) with no problems.
You can still operate it in Tablet mode, you just don't have some of
the functions of true Tablet OS. In practice I just use it in standard
clamshell laptop mode 99% of the time.
I used to sit firmly in the 'cheap, almost disposable' ADCP laptop camp
but the CF18 has changed my view, it is very good!
Hope this helps, Nick.

Howdy, Hi. I am looking at the Tablet PC - convertible configuration
of
the Toughbook CF-18. Does anyone have any experience or advice about
whether the Tablet version of Windows XP or XP Pro works better with
the
serial port? Specifically communication with a Rio Grande Workhorse
ADCP
through the serial port connected by direct cable or by radio modem.
Thanks. Jerry, Div.4 Hydro. Montrose, CO.
