Water Science Center and Data Chiefs:

The purpose of this email is to announce the schedule for Office of
Surface Water (OSW) hydroacoustics training classes for fiscal year 2007.

Training Schedule for Hydroacoustics

The 2007 hydroacoustics training schedule is available by going to
<http://hydroacoustics.usgs.gov/>http://hydroacoustics.usgs.gov/ and
clicking on the "2007 ADCP Training Schedule" link. All classes for
fiscal year 2007 are now open for enrollment. Please use the above
url and click on the appropriate link to enroll for a
class. Nomination status can be viewed by going to
<http://hydroacoustics.usgs.gov/training/Course_Status.html>http://hydroacoustics.usgs.gov/training/Course_Status.html.
Some of the locations for the training classes are not yet finalized,
but the class will likely be held in same region as currently
indicated in the training schedule.

Changes for FY2007

The OSW will be offering a variation of the refresher class "Review
of ADCP Discharge Measurement Data" in FY2007. With the scheduled
introduction of WinRiver II this fall, OSW will offer a special 4-day
session titled "Introduction to WinRiver II and ADCP Refresher". We
are also including some exposure to the use of StreamPro's in our
class "Streamflow Measurements Using ADCP's". We are planning a
second refresher class that will include one day of work with StreamPro's.

Enrollment Policies

In order to nominate individuals for a class, please follow the links
to the classes in the table shown at
<http://hydroacoustics.usgs.gov/training/schedule.html>http://hydroacoustics.usgs.gov/training/schedule.html
and complete the Web-based enrollment process. USGS cooperators may
register for training classes provided the local Water Science Center
sends an email supporting their enrollment to the course coordinator.

In response to feedback from Water Science Center (WSC) offices, we
now allow nominations for all the classes offered in FY2007,
effective immediately. We hope that this will allow WSCs to more
effectively plan their training.

We will send out a reminder about each class that will include a
deadline for enrollment. If we do not have enough nominees in a
given session, that session may be cancelled. If we have too many
nominees for a session, decisions on which nominees will be selected
to attend will be based on when the nomination was made, need for the
training, and other factors. If you are not selected for a course
you will be notified by OSW as soon as possible.

Training Class Costs

The cost for the 5-day classes is typically $1000. For non-USGS
students the cost of processing a credit card payment will be added
to this cost. In order for us to effectively plan for these training
courses, late withdrawals from training courses by WSC personnel will
be required to pay 75% of the course tuition. If a training nominee
withdraws after the deadline for enrollment, the WSC can either find
a substitute or pay 75% of the tuition. The final deadline for
enrollment will typically be set by the course coordinator in an
email reminder sent to the acoustics mailing list and WSC and Data
Chiefs. The OSW will exercise discretion regarding the application
of this policy for legitimate late withdrawals.

TMS and Enrollment in Hydroacoustics Classes

Please NOTE that entering an individual in the USGS NTC Training
Management System (TMS) DOES NOT nominate them for a hydroacoustics
class. You MUST follow the instructions above to nominate students
for these classes. Likewise, nominating someone for this class using
the instructions below DOES NOT enter them into TMS. Once you have
completed the nomination via the hydroacoustics pages, you also need
to enter the course into TMS, as TMS is the official process for
obligating and recording all individual and group USGS training.

If you have ideas or comments or suggestions for improvement in the
area of hydroacoustics training or support, please send email to
Kevin Oberg (<mailto:kaoberg at usgs.gov>kaoberg at usgs.gov) or the
Hydroacoustics Work Group
(<mailto:hawg at simon.er.usgs.gov>hawg at simon.er.usgs.gov).

Regards

Kevin
