[Acoustics] pcmcia serial card adapters

Several years ago I bought a R40 ThinkPad (it was the only choice on the
GSA list). Specs said it had a serial port. What IBM considered a serial
port was a Belkin USB/Serial adaptor which was basically useless. I
purchased a "ruggidized" Socket Serial PCMCIA serial adaptor. Until
recently, it has worked fine for our RioGrande set to the highest baud
rate. In spite of the ruggidized description, it is quite fragile, and I
think the current problem is a broken pigtail connection. This is not a
setup suitable for typical field use - requires a good deal of gentle TLC.
Someone suggested encouraging the manufacturers to make the the move to
USB. Seems like a good idea.

[Acoustics] pcmcia serial card adapters
We recently purchased a new Rugged Notebook M220 to use with our Sontek
Riversurveyor. It has only one serial port which seems to be the trend
these days. We usually plug our GPS receiver into a second serial port to
get more detailed data when working from a manned boat platform. We would
like to purchase a pcmcia serial card adapter for this laptop.
I thought I'd try to take advantage of everyone's experience with these.
With that in mind, can I get some recommendations on a reliable one? What
have been some pitfalls using these pcmcia cards?
Thanks,
