[Acoustics] DCP grounding

Hey All,
 
I'm curious if anyone out there can enlighten me on how critical, or
not, it is to Earth ground a DCP that's controlling an ADVM via SDI-12?
Has anyone had issues with this before?  Out here in the Sacramento /
San Joaquin Valley of California we don't "tend" to get much lightning,
although we've seen a fair bit lately.  I'm curious if the LACK of an
Earth ground for a DCP (Campbell Scientific, Sutron, Vaisala, etc.) can
affect the SDI-12 communications with an ADVM in non-lightning
conditions?  I'd appreciate any experiential information that you may
have out there.
