Greetings:
The purpose of this email is to remind you that there are four
hydroacoustics training classes still open for enrollment for the period
June-August 2005, and that registration for these classes should be
completed soon. Listed below are the classes that are still open, the
number of USGS students currently enrolled, the number of USGS students
required to put on the class, and the closing date for the class.
No. USGS students

August 22 - 26, 2005 Louisville,KY
Unless the required number of USGS students are enrolled by the closing
dates above, it will be necessary to cancel the class or classes. Please
note that based on present enrollment the Streamflow Measurements class in
August is most likely to be cancelled. Please make your registration as
soon as possible.
Employees may register for these classes by going to
http://hydroacoustics.usgs.gov/training/schedule_2004.html and clicking on
the appropriate class title. You can also monitor the status of course
enrollment by clicking on the links in

Short Descriptions of the Classes
SW2322: Review of ADCP Discharge Measurement Data
This 3-day class is designed to provide instruction on using WinRiver to
review streamflow measurement data collected using RDI ADCP's and on new
water and bottom modes available on Rio Grande ADCP's. However, if there
is interest, we will consider providing instruction on review of data
collected with SonTek's RiverSurveyor software and ADP's. Students will
need to specifically indicate their interest in having SonTek material
covered in the enrollment form (see below). The course will require some
pre-class work by each student. The pre-class work will consist of some
reading assignments that must be completed prior to the class.
The following topics will be covered during the class, (1) review of basic
principles of ADCP operation, (2) USGS policy on use of ADCP's, (3) ADCP
direct commands, (4) review of basic procedures for streamflow measurement,
and (5) using WinRiver to playback and review ADCP discharge
measurements. We also will allow time for students to present data files
that they have questions about and we will review them as a group.
SW1321: Streamflow Measurements Using ADCP's (RDI)
This 5-day class provides an introduction to the use of ADCP's for
streamflow measurement. The course combines lectures and "hand's-on" use of
ADCP's for collecting streamflow, and requires some pre- and post-class
work by each student. The pre-class work consists of reading assignments
and an exercise that must be completed prior to the class. Post-class work
consists of collecting data using an ADCP and having that data reviewed by
a certified USGS ADCP instructor.
The emphasis of this course is on the practical aspects of using ADCP's for
streamflow measurements. Some of the topics that will be covered during the
course include (1) basic principles of ADCP operation, (2) configuration
files, (3) ADCP expert commands, (4) basic procedures for streamflow
measurement, (5) review ADCP measurements and compute discharge, and (6)
trouble-shooting problems encountered in the field. We will cover ADCP's
made by RD Instruments.
Cost: $1,000
SW1319: Streamflow Record Computation using ADVM's and Index-velocity Methods
The purpose of this class is provide training on index velocity
measurements and ratings. The class will focus on hardware for index
velocity measurements, including acoustic velocity meters (AVM's),
horizontal acoustic profilers, and other devices, review and screening of
velocity data, and development for developing simple and complex index
velocity ratings for the above measurements.
