[Acoustics] Policy memo on using Winriver 10.06??

The WinRiver 10.06 memo was not released by OSW.  About the time that the 
memo was to go out (some time late last spring) we had several reports of 
problems using WinRiver with GPS.  We wanted to wait to see if this was a 
software problem, or something else.  Some users indicated that by using an 
earlier version of WinRiver, the problem disappeared.  However, we were not 
able to reproduce this problem, no matter what we did.  We could trace it 
to specific kinds of laptops, OS's, etc.  It proved to be quite a difficult 
problem to track down.

Recently Dave Mueller has determined that in quite a few instances, the 
reported problems were caused by use of a new SocketIO serial PCMCIA 
card.  See

say that we've 'solved' _all_ the reported problems, but we have confirmed 
that many of the reported problems could be traced to use of this 
card.  Therefore, we feel much better about releasing the memo.  Of course, 
in practice, I think most people in the USGS are already using WinRiver 10.06 .

I have forwarded the memo to the HAWG again for a final OK prior to 
releasing it.  OSW has already reviewed it and approved it, so it should be 
released shortly.  If you want a copy of the draft - let me know.
